The Motorola Edge Review

Motorola Edge Quick Overview

Motorola Edge Bottom Line:

For $699.99, the Motorola Edge is solidly in the middle of modern smartphone pricing. It is a 5G compatible device with a solid 144Hz refresh rate. Like many of Motorola’s smartphones, it has great battery life and good processing power.

Beyond this, however, it starts to falter, especially considering the other phones you can get for $700. The camera system is sub-par, and the phone is noticeably bulky. It has a mono speaker with fairly mediocre sound quality. Overall it is not a bad phone, but it is difficult to recommend over similarly priced phones with much more impressive specifications.

What’s the Cost of the Motorola Edge?

The Motorola Edge prices out at $699, the same as the last generation of Moto Edge models. For context, this is $100 less than the iPhone 13 and the Samsung Galaxy S21, both of which are impressive smartphones compared to the latest Motorola Edge.

Who is the Motorola Edge Best For?

The Motorola Edge could be a solid phone option for your kids. It has great battery life, so they do not have to devote too much attention to keeping it charged, and it is 5G LTE compatible, making it future-proof for the foreseeable future. It is also good at running mobile apps, which is another thing your kids will most likely enjoy.

What Are the Advantages of the Moto Edge?

  • The Moto Edge Has 5G Capabilities
  • The Moto Edge Has a High-Quality Display
  • The Moto Edge Is Good for Gaming

The Moto Edge Has 5G Capabilities

Being 5G compatible is a must in this era, as 5G networks are becoming more commonplace and accessible daily. Soon, 5G will be our primary form of cellular network, and we need phones that can use it.

That being said, 5G compatibility has become the norm among the biggest smartphone brands. Apple, Google, and Samsung are all making their newest phones 5G compatible by default. The Edge is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, giving it connectivity specs on par with other premium flagship phones.

5G makes Moto G a competitor, but it does not give it an advantage over its competition.

The Moto Edge Has a High-Quality Display

The fact that the Moto Edge has a 144Hz maximum refresh rate and OLED display is a huge point in its favor. This rivals the best premium phones on the market, many of which have a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz.

That being said, the definition does not keep up with phones like the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and the Google Pixel 6, which run at 1440p instead of 1080p.

The Moto Edge Is Good for Gaming

The Moto Edge has a lot of options for people who like to play games on their phones. The long battery life is especially useful as games are one of the factors that can drain your phone battery the fastest. While some smartphones are specifically built with gaming in mind, the Moto Edge is the best mainstream option with strong gaming capabilities.

What Are the Disadvantages of the Moto Edge?

  • The Moto Edge Doesn’t Have a Rear Camera Telephoto Lens
  • The Moto Edge Feels Cheap

The Moto Edge Doesn’t Have a Rear Camera Telephoto Lens

By doubling the resolution of its main camera since the previous generation, the Moto Edge had to make some sacrifices. This comes in the exclusion of any form of a rear telephoto lens. This is not a common feature in all smartphones, but it is strange that Moto Edge had it in one generation and dropped it in the next.

Meanwhile, Samsung has made the rear telephoto lens a staple of its best devices. The Samsung Galaxy S22 series sports telephoto lenses as a state-of-the-art camera system. This Motorola phone chose not to compete with the best of the best regarding camera capabilities, which is readily apparent. Still, the selfie camera is certainly functional, and with the optical zoom and ultra-wide angle rear camera, the Edge is ready for your social media needs despite its mid-range camera capabilities.

The Moto Edge Feels Cheap

The Moto Edge has a polycarbonate base, making it less impressive than the previous Moto Edge generation. The phone feels dull and cheap when compared to its competition. The plastic design is not necessarily fragile but does not have the high-quality feel of other smartphones in its cohort.

By contrast, the iPhone 13 (Apple’s most advanced line of smartphones) has a tough ceramic shield with recycled glass and aluminum for the body. At 6.14 ounces, it has a light but sturdy weight. The Moto Edge feels considerably less premium in its materials when comparing the two.

Should You Buy the Moto Edge?

The Moto Edge does many things right, especially its display, battery life, and processor. However, we cannot recommend the Moto Edge over other phones that do similar things for a comparable price. The cameras do not hold up against the competition, and the materials used to make the telephone are cheap compared to the premium design of something like the iPhone 13. Anything the Moto Edge can do, another phone can do it better.
