While the iPhone 14 is one of the most advanced phones on the market, one lingering criticism is that it did not make a significant leap in hardware and software over the iPhone 13. This doesn’t signal a quality lack in the 14; instead, it’s a testament to the 13’s power and efficiency.

The iPhone 13 was a significant upgrade over the iPhone 12, with an improved processor, camera system, and battery power. Anyone looking for a new iPhone who isn’t ready to shell out for an iPhone 14 would find themselves more than satisfied with the iPhone 13. If you go with the pro models, like the iPhone 13 Pro Max, the improvement over the iPhone 12 Pro is even more apparent.

What Are the iPhone 13 Specs and Features?

The iPhone 13 sports a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display and weighs 6.14 ounces. The display is all-screen OLED with a pixel resolution of 2532 by 1170 at 460 PPI. It has a haptic touch, 800 nits brightness, and an HDR display. Additionally, the 13 is still one of the best iPhones for water resistance.

One significant upgrade over the iPhone 12 is that the 13 utilizes the A15 Bionic chip. This processor rivals anything else on the market, and it is the same chip that the iPhone 14 uses. If you want to get your hands on a powerful phone, the iPhone 13 is arguably just as good as the iPhone 14.

The device also has a six-core CPU, four cour GPU, and sixteen-core neural engine. It is rated IP68 for water and dust resistance and is compatible with iOS 15 and the latest iPad and Apple Watch models.

The camera features a dual-lens set with a 12MP wide telephoto and 12MP ultrawide camera lens in the rear camera. The front camera system is a 12MP TrueDepth lens, great for selfies and FaceID. The video recording system on the camera app got a massive upgrade with its cinematic mode, which persisted into the iPhone 14. Cinematic mode lets you take movie-quality videos, with the phone automatically editing blur and lighting.

Additionally, the phone has improved or new features like night mode and low-light mode, video playback zoom, optical zoom, Portrait Mode, and Dolby Vision, helping you explore more video and photographic styles than previous iPhone models.

If you trade in last year’s iPhone 12 for an iPhone 13, you’ll find a slight redesign. The iPhone 13 comes with a smaller notch resulting in more screen real estate. This design was popular enough that it hardly changed in the base iPhone 14. The 13 comes with a ceramic shield front and offers six color options: (Product)RED, Starlight, Midnight, Blue, Pink, and Green.

The battery of the iPhone 13 is 3,227mAh, barely smaller than the iPhone 14. This is a middle-ground battery for modern smartphones, but you can get over ten hours of battery life between charges with the iPhone 13. The 13 comes with wireless charging options, MagSafe compatibility, and a USB-C charging cord adapter for fast-charging chargers.

What Are Some Pros and Cons of the iPhone 13?

The best thing the iPhone 13 has going for is that the device is relatively similar to the iPhone 14. While it is significantly cheaper now that the iPhone 14 has all but replaced it, it is not a significant downgrade in any category. In fact, in many ways, these phones are identical.

The design innovations are the same, the battery is comparable, the cameras and cinematic mode are very similar, and the same A15 Bionic chip runs the hardware at the phone’s core. The iPhone 13 has best-in-class processing at an excellent price compared to its newer sibling.

Another benefit of the iPhone 13 is that it comes with all the features you would expect of an Apple phone. Apple does a great job of letting you connect your devices in various ways so long as they are Apple devices. With an Apple 13, you get access to iMessage, iCloud, and different Apple-specific apps on the App Store.

A negative of the iPhone 13 is that its charging is not impressive. Many premium smartphones come out with batteries as large as 5,000mAh, so a 3,227mAh battery will not impress many. With how battery intensive so many of the phone’s more advanced features are, you are likely to burn through the battery quickly.

In addition, if you have the extra money, there is no real reason to purchase an iPhone 13 in favor of an iPhone 14. While the changes are minimal, they are still present, so the 13 is only the better option if it fits your budget better. One of the most significant changes: the iPhone 13 only has a 60Hz refresh rate, while the base 14 comes with 120Hz.

What Is the iPhone 13 Pricing?

At launch, the iPhone 13 was $829, making it more expensive than your average phone. However, after the launch of the iPhone 14, you can pick up an iPhone 13 for only $699, which is significantly cheaper than its newer counterpart.

This makes it a middle-tier phone regarding price, rivaling phones like the Google Pixel series. The impressive power of the phone compared with budget phones that are out there makes this a very attractive price. Still, if you want the cheapest iPhone, you should choose the iPhone 11, iPhone 12 Mini, or iPhone SE

Bottom Line

The iPhone 13 is a fantastic phone with excellent quality for a great price. It would be difficult to find a phone this impressive for only $699 anywhere else. If you want an even more significant discount, all the major carriers will have deals for the iPhone 13 and won’t have any deals on the new iPhone 14 Pro Max.
