Cox Mobile Becomes Spectrum Mobile

On August 20, 2026, Charter Communications, operating as Spectrum, closed on its multi-billion dollar acquisition of Cox. 

The sale, by extension, meant that Cox’s cell phone brand, Cox Mobile, would effectively cease operations, with new customers being directed to Spectrum Mobile plans.

Spectrum Acquires Cox: Timeline

The deal between Spectrum and Cox was first announced in May of 2025. As with any deal of this size, it was subject to a number of legislative hurdles before becoming official.

The most important of these was sign-off from the Federal Communication Commission; the FCC approved the deal in February of 2026. 

The last approval Spectrum needed was from the California Public Utility Commission (CPUC). That was announced on August 13, 2026, meaning Spectrum finally had the go-ahead to declare their acquisition of Cox complete. 

Will the Cox Brand Cease to Exist?

Charter Communications’ acquisition of Cox means that all Cox products will become Spectrum ones, and this includes Cox Mobile. 

Despite this, the Cox name will live on, as the overarching Charter Communications brand will now be called Cox Communications. 

What Does the Acquisition Mean for Cox Mobile Subscribers?

While current Cox Mobile subscribers can keep their current plans, their bills will eventually say “Spectrum Mobile” on them. New subscribers, meanwhile, will be directed to a lineup of Spectrum Mobile plans, rather than Cox Mobile ones. 

Spectrum is offering Cox internet subscribers a free year of Spectrum Mobile service, though it should be noted that the deal is available to all would-be customers signing up for the first time.
