Recording a phone call on an iPhone use to require some roundabout hacks, like recording via the Voice Memos app, or using third-party tools. However, with the release of iOS 18, Apple debuted a new way to record calls natively, eliminating the need for these convoluted workarounds.

In this article, we’ll explain how to record phone and FaceTime audio calls right from your device, while also touching upon some of the other methods in the event you have an older iPhone that isn’t compatible with iOS 18 and new phone call recording feature.

Using the Built-In iPhone Call Recorder

With iOS 18.1 and later, Apple offers a straightforward call recording feature. Here’s how to use it:

Here’s how to use it:

  1. Tap the record icon (often shown as a waveform icon) in the top-left of the call screen.
  2. A brief countdown appears; after that, the recording starts, and both parties will hear a voice prompt that the call is being recorded.
  3. To stop recording, either tap the recording button again or end the call.
  4. Afterward, you can find the recording and transcript in the Notes app.

Your recording will appear automatically in the Notes app, complete with a full transcript. That’s especially useful for interviews, meetings, or any call you might want to reference later. You can even search for keywords within the transcript.

If you prefer not to have the feature available at all, Apple also gives you the option to disable it in Settings>Apps>Phone>Call Recording.

What If You Don’t Have iOS 18 Call Recording?

If you’re using an older iPhone or live in a region where Apple’s feature hasn’t launched, there are still ways to record calls — though they require a few extra steps.

Use Apple's Voice Memos App

One of the simplest ways to record a phone call on an iPhone doesn’t actually involve recording on the same phone you’re using for the call. Instead, it uses Apple’s built-in Voice Memos app.

You’ll need your iPhone and a second device you can make or receive calls on—that could be a landline, another iPhone, an iPad, a Mac, or even an Android phone. Before the call begins, open the Voice Memos app on your iPhone and tap the big red record button. Then, using your second device, place the call or have the person you’re talking to call you. Once you’re connected, put the call on speakerphone and keep your recording iPhone nearby so it can clearly pick up both sides of the conversation. When you’re finished, tap the red button again to stop and save the recording.

Use Third-Party Call Recording Apps

Third-party apps are the best way to record audio on an iPhone if you don’t have access to a second device as required in the first method above. The App Store offers plenty of highly rated third-party call recording apps for iPhones.

To find reputable apps, we always recommend reading App Store reviews and paying special attention to the permission settings. Depending on the developer, your contact information and call logs can be used differently. So, protect your privacy by doing due diligence before downloading the app.

Use Google Voice

Google Voice is a cloud-based smartphone system for personal and business use. The pros of Google Voice are that it is compatible with iPhones, creating a personal account is free, and recording is easy.

However, Google Voice has a few limitations, chief among them that it can only record incoming calls, not outgoing calls. In addition, you must use a separate phone number in the Google app, and it also only works over WiFi, so you can't make or record calls on LTE or 5G data.

Use Cases: Why Record Conversations on iPhone

Saving audio recordings on an iPhone has plenty of practical purposes. The main being to capture details from conversations for future reference. For example, a phone recording of a call with a customer service rep can be incredibly helpful when it comes to multi-step processes like how to switch phone carriers. Another instance when recording conversations can be useful is when a friend or colleague provides you with directions on how to do something. Similarly, you can use recordings to transcribe conversations for reference materials. If you're on a training call, recording the conversation gives you something to refer to later.

And, let’s not forget there can be sentimental reasons for recording conversations, like a birthday, anniversary or congratulations call with a loved one. Phone recordings are fantastic for preserving these milestone personal moments.

Record Calls on iPhone: Ethical Considerations and Legality

Before recording any and all conversations on your iPhone, remember there could be legal ramifications. State laws vary when it comes to what and how you're allowed to record. While some only need one-party consent, others require two-party consent, where both participants agree to the recording. So, check your state's specific laws before hitting that record button.

There are also ethical reasons to consider. Some people don't like the idea of compromising their privacy or could get embarrassed by how they sound over the phone. That’s why even if your state doesn’t require two-party consent, it’s wise to let the person on the other side of the line know you are recording in case they object.
