There’s no getting around it: major carrier cell phone plans are expensive. But adding lines to them—i.e. turning them into family plans—can bring down their costs per line significantly.
Such is the case with AT&T’s plans, which are among the most expensive on the market. As you add lines to them, they drop in price precipitously.
In this article, we’ll detail our favorite premium, budget, and overall AT&T family plans, as well as explain why it makes sense to sign up with AT&T in the first place.

Like competitor Verizon, AT&T allows customers to mix and match their family plans. That means each person can sign up for a plan that suits them the best.
For example, let’s say you and your spouse are out and about a lot and prefer hotspot functionality in your plans to power your other devices. In this case, you might opt for Unlimited Premium PL, since it includes 60GB of high-speed mobile hotspot data to use each month. For your kids, you might prefer a more pared back plan to simply keep them connected, like Unlimited Value Plus VL.
This ability to mix-and-match gives you tons of flexibility in your family plan. If, however, you want to keep things simple by choosing one plan for all, you’ll want to read on.

Signing up with AT&T means you get all of the benefits of a major carrier, including reliable customer service (with actual brick and mortar stores), a wide selection of phones, and excellent nationwide coverage.
AT&T delivers some of the best coverage in all of the country, blanketing nearly the entirety of it with 4G and 5G service.
AT&T’s 4G LTE is the most wide-reaching in the country, outdoing the likes of Verizon and T-Mobile. The company’s 5G network, meanwhile, covers just a tiny bit less of the country than T-Mobile’s (the industry leader).
Check out AT&T’s network in the map below, and use the buttons on top to switch between 4G and 5G coverage:
As frustrating as some of the phone hold times can be, you can generally get in touch with AT&T representatives nearly any time of the day—which is something many prepaid carriers don’t offer.
What’s more, AT&T stores are all over the place, so you probably aren’t far from one if you prefer in-person assistance.
One of the biggest upsides of going with a major carrier is the wide selection of phones. AT&T stocks flagship and mid-range models from the likes of Samsung, Apple, Google, and Motorola—and frequently runs promotions that allow you to get them at discount prices.
This makes AT&T a great option if you not only need plans but devices for your entire family. Some of AT&T’s recent promotions have included deals on the iPhone 16, the Samsung Galaxy S25, and the Google Pixel 9.
While AT&T’s individual plans may carry a premium price tag, its family plan offerings present a compelling way to save money without sacrificing quality. Whether you're looking for a top-tier plan with all the bells and whistles, a cost-conscious option to keep everyone connected, or a well-rounded plan that balances value and features, AT&T has a solution that fits the bill. With the added flexibility of mix-and-match options, extensive network coverage, in-person customer support, and access to the latest smartphones, AT&T stands out as a strong choice for families looking to stay connected.
AT&T's Unlimited Your Way allows each family member to choose their own unlimited plan—Unlimited Starter, Unlimited Extra, or Unlimited Premium—within a single account. This mix-and-match approach provides flexibility to meet individual needs while benefiting from multi-line discounts.
Adding more lines to an AT&T plan reduces the cost per line. For instance, with four lines on the Unlimited Premium plan, each line costs $50.99 per month, compared to $86 for a single line.
The Value Plus VL plan offers unlimited talk, text, and data for $50.99 per month with AutoPay and paperless billing. It's a budget-friendly option without mobile hotspot capabilities.
Our choice for the best overall AT&T family plan is Unlimited Extra EL. It gives you 75GB of premium (i.e., unprioritized) data to use each month, as well as 30GB of mobile hotspot data, and Mexico and Canada privileges.
While certainly not as flashy or packed with perks as similarly priced offerings from T-Mobile and Verizon, AT&T’s Unlimited Extra EL is nonetheless a good value. And it gets even better as you add lines, as it comes down from $76/month to $51/month for three lines, or $41/month for four lines.
We think AT&T’s Value Plus VL is the carrier’s best budget family plan. It includes unlimited talk, text, and deprioritized data, plus access to AT&T’s powerful 5G network.
This plan gets very inexpensive as you add lines, coming down to just $30.99/month when you add four. This makes Value Plus VL a great option if you’re looking for a cheap family plan on AT&T’s great network.
Our favorite premium AT&T famly plan is the carrier’s Unlimited Premium PL offering. It includes unlimited premium data—no deprioritization, ever—along with a generous 60GB mobile hotspot data allowance
Unlimited Premium PL is AT&T’s most expensive plan at $86/month for a single line, but comes down in price as you add them. Each line costs just $61/month, for example, when you add three, or $51/month when you add four.
