Why Look for a Senior Phone Plan?

Simply put, because it’s more affordable!

Many big cell carriers, including T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T, offer special phone plans for seniors. "Seniors," at least in the eyes of these companies, are those 55 years or older. If you've hit this age benchmark, you might qualify for dedicated senior phone plans.

Many senior phone plans come with steep discounts, so you might pay less for your phone plan over time than if you stuck with a traditional one. Furthermore, many of the best senior phone plans come with extra features (or streamlined features) for folks over 55 who don’t need to stream media to five different devices at once. For example, the Essentials plan is perfect pick for seniors who need access to their phone network in emergencies and want to stay in touch with family.

Basically, it’s a good idea to pick a T-Mobile senior phone plan if you want to save money and focus on what matters based on your phone usage. With a senior phone plan in T-Mobile’s network, you won’t spend money on things you won’t use.

How Much is the T-Mobile Senior Plan?

Depending on your plan, the T-Mobile senior plans can range from $27 per line per month to upwards of $65 per line per month. T-Mobile senior plans with one line are usually more expensive than those with multiple lines.

The best cell phone plans cost more compared to the Essentials 55+ plan. You’ll also expect to pay more for 5G data or 5G coverage from your consumer cellular company. The Magenta MAX 55+ plan comes with extra goodies for its monthly price, especially for new customers, such as high-speed data allowances and unlimited talk & text.

With that out of the way, let’s break down the three currently available T-Mobile senior citizen plans: T-Mobile Essentials, T-Mobile Magenta, and T-Mobile Magenta MAX.

T-Mobile Essentials

First up is T-Mobile Essentials: the most basic plan that costs $27.50 per line per month. For this price, you get two lines with autopay features, so you'll automatically pay $55 per month in addition to taxes and fees.

Note, however, that you have to pay $40 per month if you only need a single line with this T-Mobile senior citizen discount plan.

The Essentials plan is the ideal budget-friendly choice for older adults who don't want to break the bank paying for a phone plan. This entry-level plan comes with a host of standard and desirable features, such as standard definition streaming, unlimited 2G data in Mexico and Canada, and unlimited 3G mobile hotspot data.

You can also enjoy texting abroad. Unlimited talk and texting combine well with the unlimited data allowances mentioned above, whether you have an Apple iPhone or Android device.

T-Mobile provides 5G access at no extra cost for this plan and all subsequent plans, too. That's a good thing as 5G networks rolls out across the country, meaning you'll be able to take full advantage of faster download speeds where they are available.

Worried about security? T-Mobile's Essentials plan provides scam-blocking protection. This can be ideal if you aren't certain about identifying scam or spam callers or texters. You'll also enjoy free stuff every week, such as new discounts or deals.

All in all, the T-Mobile Essentials senior plan is a good choice if you are looking to save a bit of money and you don’t care too much about streaming quality (i.e., you stream your media more on your TV than you do on your mobile device). Don’t forget, as well, that you technically have unlimited data with the Essentials plan, but you might see slower data speeds after 50 GB.

Pros:

  • Fairly low-cost, especially if you have two lines at once
  • Comes with scam-blocking protection to keep your identity and personal information safe
  • Lots of free stuff every week

Cons:

  • Only comes with standard-definition streaming
  • Data allowances and caps can feel restrictive, particularly when traveling abroad
  • Monthly rate does not include taxes and fees

T-Mobile Magenta

T-Mobile's Magenta plan is next on the list. It's $35 per line per month, and you can pay $70 per month for two lines with auto-pay functionality enabled. Unlike the previous plan price, this includes taxes and fees, so there are no hidden fees to contend with. You have to pay $50 per month for just a single line, however. Alternatively, you can add up to four lines on this plan for $140 per month.

There's a lot to like about T-Mobile Magenta, even with the price hike. For example, you get much better prime-time data allowances and faster data download speeds. You'll also enjoy Gogo in-flight Wi-Fi access, so you can access your email, watch movies, or surf the Internet while you are on an airplane.

Unfortunately, the T-Mobile Magenta plan still comes with standard-definition streaming. This may or may not be a major downside, depending on how often you stream media to your phone, however.

You’ll get 5 GB of 4G LTE mobile hotspot data +5 GB of 4G data in Mexico and Canada. If you are traveling, you’ll get 2 GB of data as well, plus a free Netflix subscription no matter where you roam. In the end, the Magenta plan is a good choice for older adults who use their phones for more than just basic Internet surfing or who need to add a few grandkids to the plan to ensure everyone stays connected.

Pros:

  • Still one of the best prices, particularly for two lines per month
  • Offers in-flight Wi-Fi access
  • Good data allowances, even while traveling abroad
  • Free Netflix subscription
  • The perfect choice for older adults who want a mix of everything
  • No hidden fees

Cons:

  • Can get expensive as you add more lines to your plan
  • Still only has standard-definition streaming

T-Mobile Magenta MAX

Last but not least is T-Mobile Magenta MAX: T-Mobile's priciest senior phone plan. It's $45 per line per month, and once again, you can get two lines for $90 per month with auto-pay functionality enabled. You'll otherwise have to pay $65 per month for one line.

Even though this plan is the most expensive out of the bunch, T-Mobile has packed it with great perks, including the above-mentioned Gogo in-flight access. This includes in-flight unlimited text messaging and Wi-Fi. Magenta MAX also comes with 40 GB of 4G LTE mobile hotspot data and 5 GB of 4G data in Canada and Mexico.

If you like streaming, this is the senior T-Mobile phone plan for you, since it comes with 4K UHD streaming capabilities. Even better, T-Mobile provides you with 2x data speed and texting while you are abroad, so you'll never miss out on your favorite shows even when you travel.

That’s not all that T-Mobile brings to the table. It offers free Netflix subscriptions for one-line plans and two-line plans alike, plus the option to use name ID and voicemail-to-text features. In the end, the Magenta MAX plan is clearly the ideal choice for older adults who like to travel frequently or who don’t want to have to wait to send large files.

It can also be a good pick if you want a senior phone plan that allows you to complete your business projects on time or collaborate with your coworkers from afar.

Pros:

  • No hidden fees
  • Unlimited in-flight texting and Wi-Fi
  • Tons of mobile hotspot data to take advantage of
  • Ultra high-definition streaming in 4K resolution
  • Good Netflix subscriptions
  • Extra features for voicemail to text
  • Excellent roaming data allowances

Cons:

  • A little more expensive than the other senior T-Mobile phone plans available
  • Only ideal if you’ll actually use the data allowances – otherwise, it can be a bit expensive
